Filipino Basketball
I just got home after playing basketball over at a new friends place. Oh man! I thought I wasn’t going to get home. It took forever to get here. His name was Ray and he was cool. He was a Singaporean but he didn’t grow up here so he talks “normally”. If you’ve been here, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
Anyway, His condo was nice. It had a basketball court in which we played. Too bad that there was only five of us who came to play so we decided to play two on two with one guy on the bench.
On with the game! It was tough. I was the second shortest guy and I had to guard a six foot player who was faster than me. I gave him all the crappy cheap shots I know. He got it all and I know he felt it because every single time I was guarding him, he only took jump shots. Too bad it always went in.
Anyway, after the game we had an interesting talk about basketball. We got to talk about the NBA. We both agreed that the Dallas Mavericks are going to be champions this year. Go Dallas! The rest of the guys all rooted for the Phoenix Suns. Too bad they ain’t gonna last in the playoffs. You can’t win a seven game series without defense. And if you’re going to say to me that they are defending now. I wouldn’t call letting the opposing team score 102 points per game as a good defensive effort, if there is any.
After the brief NBA talk, I was surprised that he knew about the PBA. He knew Mark “The Spark” Caguioa. He knew he was good. I asked Ray how he knew the PBA and he said he always checked on the internet.
His next statement surprised me more. He said he would be coming to the Philippines to train under Eric Altamirano in a two week camp. What?!?! Is he serious? He was, I assure you.
That got me thinking. We Filipinos really are good in basketball. It’s just sad that sometimes we get so full of ourselves and we don’t do our best when it comes to basketball. It’s called being smug about it. All the politics. The lack of pride. It’s what we have. Other countries look up to us when it comes to basketball. It just makes you think.
I hope the air becomes clear of this smug. Unless that happens. We can’t move forward. And I’m not just talking about Filipino Basketball.

PS
Next time, I’ll continue to write about my friends vacation here in Singapore. I was meaning to write that but I just couldn’t afford the time. It’s crazy out here.
